Enemies rank tarot card

Enemies rank tarot card

Rank is the difficulty of an opponent relative to the player's level in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II.

Hostile creatures are assigned one of five ranks, in order of increasing challenge level: critter, normal, lieutenant, boss, and elite boss. Rank determines the color of an opponent's name:

Rank is used to balance encounters based on the player: normal enemies are roughly the same level as the player, bosses and elite bosses are significantly stronger, and critters are weaker. The level of enemies is calculated as follows:

MIN(max creature type level, MIN(MAX(party level + rank modifier, minimum area level), maximum area level))

The rank level modifier is -3 for Critter, -2 for Weak, -1 for Normal, 0 for Lieutenant, +1 for Boss and +2 for Elite Boss.

This means that the challenge posed by enemies is adjusted to match the party's level, but the enemies' level is restricted from being too low or too high for the intended difficulty of the area.

The game's difficulty level determines the relative strength of all opponents. Some encounters, like the battle with the Archdemon or the High Dragon in Origins, are not tailored to the party's level.

Rank is also used for treasure generation. Higher ranked creatures tend to drop more powerful consumables and equipment. The same applies to containers.

Description of each rank

Critter

Creatures significantly less powerful than any party member. The party must engage many of these to have a challenge. Some examples are deepstalkers, spiderlings and wolves.

Normal

Creatures slightly weaker than the average party member. They pose little challenge to the party. Examples include hurlocks and genlocks.

Lieutenant

Creatures stronger than a single party member. For some party members they pose a difficult fight. Examples include hurlock alphas and stone golems. In the Tactics menu Lieutenants are referred to as Elite.

Boss

Creatures significantly stronger than a single party member. Examples include monsters like the Tower of Ishal Ogre, Revenants, the Corrupted Spider Queen and the Broodmother; and characters such as Duncan, Zathrian, Branka, Kolgrim, and Arl Rendon Howe.

Elite Boss

Elite Bosses offer a challenge for the entire party. Each elite boss has unique abilities, some have many hit points, others regenerate health very fast. Some elite bosses have traps surrounding their area. Examples include high dragons, the Archdemon and the Ancient Rock Wraith from Dragon Age II.
